In hopes of designing the premier travel case for pipers, Griffin created the PiobArmor Deluxe Pipe Case. This case is crushproof, waterproof, and pressurized for airplane travel. With the use of laser cut foam inserts for the drones, there is no chance of the instrument being able to shift within the case. The case comes complete with treaded wheels, steelpin hinges, rubberized grips, removable zippered compartments, indicators for temperature and humidity, shoulder strap, humidifier, and an extended rolling handle. You've Got Questions, I've Got Answers!
How tough is the case? The case is designed to withstand the extremes that can occur during travel and transit of your heirloom instrument. We take special pride in the quality of transit from a moisture control standpoint as well as in rough-and-tumble situations. We’ve seen a lot from misuse by airline staff, to an accidental drop down a flight of stairs. With proper use, the case can help protect against most damage that may occur. Most things (save for earthquakes, firing squads, and volcanic eruptions, etc.) won’t be a worry in the protection of your pursuit.
How do I store the pipes inside? You have to take your drones fully apart at the tuning pins. They lay in the lower half of the case while the bottom joints, stocks, and bag all stay intact and are set on top. There might be some excess room if using the zippered lid attachment, and very little room if using the padded foam insert. Chanters either fit alongside the bag and stocks, or within the PiobArmor Chanter case.
What is the optimal humidity? Generally speaking, anywhere between 50 and 70 percent humidity is optimal for instrument storage within the case. Fluctuations are normal and dependent upon the region in which the case is housed. You can achieve desired humidity by using extra humidity packs or (in the rare instance) by desiccant filters to pull moisture away.
How do I use the case’s humidifier? We make this simple, easy, and quite natural! First open the lid of the humidifier. Then, fill with water and fully immerse for 5 minutes. Next, pour out/wipe off excess. Store this inside the case and repeat up to twice monthly or until desired humidity level is reached.
What are the dimensions? Outside Dimensions: L - 21-7/8 in. W - 13-3/4 in. H - 9 in. Inside Dimensions: L - 20-1/4 in. W - 11-3/8 in. H - 7.5.
What fits inside the case? Your pipes, chanters, and various supplies are all designed to fit within the PiobArmor case. Even though the sections are padded with foam, you should avoid overpacking the case with loose accessories. This not only makes the case heavier, but also might be cause for things to get damaged if the case doesn’t close naturally.
What’s the warranty on the case? Returns are considered on a "case by case" basis including general manufacturing defects, such as cracked case lid, faulty closures. Returns will not be considered for damage for misuse, normal wear and tear, accidental damage or environmental damage. Please contact me to initiate a return.
Travel for Flight VS Normal Storage? Your case is designed to accommodate all of your needs. We say the zippered top is great for housing everything needed from spare reeds, tools, corks, hemp, etc. This is great for domestic travel from the house to band practice, gigs, and general car transit. Everything you need for tools at band practice and emergency equipment at a gig. We highly recommend all accessories are removed and changed to the use of the foam top for airplane travel. This prevents the pipes from sliding around and any possible damage from potential mishandling during transport. Your accessories should either be placed in your checked luggage (for hazardous materials like knives and batteries etc) or in a separate personal item.
Will it fit on an Airplane? Yes! The PiobArmor case is specifically designed to fit most airline dimensions. You should always double check the travel restrictions before you take off, but in our experience it’s been met with ease. We have seen this fit both in the overhead compartment and underneath seats. In addition to the small closets at the front and back of the plane. Par any troublesome airline staff, you should be able to fit this on even small planes with no issue.
How heavy is the case? This largely depends on the contents included within your case. By itself and with all the basic accessories, the case weighs 14lbs. Griffin says in his experience that with all the zippered compartments bulging with accessories, a tackle box full of spare reeds, 3 pipe chanters, a practice chanter, and a set of fully silver mounted highland bagpipes the case weighs in at 27lbs. Perfectly fine for carrying with the shoulder strap or rolling down the street.
Foam VS Zipper top? Both have different applications. If you don’t do much airplane travel at all, then the zippered top is best for domestic travel. If you’re flying most of the time or using the case for hardy travel, then the foam top is best as to not let the pipes move around and prevent against damage. We recommend both for the serious musician as travel and storage are both important in protecting your pursuit.
What is considered misuse? Well, the case is designed to withstand a lot. However, some things aren’t always a good idea in the long run. Wheeling over rough terrain is likely the most important thing to note. The wheels are tough, but not indestructible. Wheeling the case over gravel, rough roads, or long grass are generally things to avoid. They’ll likely be okay, but repeated use over this terrain will wear on the moving parts. We also don’t recommend handling the case with its rolling handle extended. Picking it up or using it as a lever may result in breakage if the case is too heavy to support the angle. We also caution against overpacking the case with loose accessories. While the instrument is as protected as it can really be, we don’t recommend leaving the case out in the hot sun, or in cold conditions for extended periods of time. The case is made for minimizing the extremes your instrument faces during travel, however nothing can prevent the eventual temperature fluctuation in severe climates.

Another of Griffin's creations. Based in tradition with modern innovation, PiobArmor's bag dressing is just what the doctor prescribed. This seasoning treatment will not only help keep your bag airtight, but it conditions the leather, wicks away unwanted moisture, sanitizes the interior, and smells like a pine forest. You know the treatment process can be sticky and somewhat problematic for first time players, but this dressing helps to keep the guessing out of your maintenance. Simply follow the instructions on the bottle and you'll have yourself an airtight bag.
Piobarmor Bag Seasoning Instructions - Based in tradition with modern innovation - • Remove all hemped joints from stocks and remove any water traps from the inside of the bag • Cork stocks using rubber stoppers (actual cork can leak some air) • Remove cap from bottle and microwave on medium heat for 30 seconds (do not allow to boil) • Add cap and shake thoroughly. If still not fully liquefied, microwave without the cap for another 30 seconds • Pour liquid seasoning into the bag using any stock or via a side zipper. 1/4 of the bottle will go a long way • Recork and evenly massage seasoning into all corners of the bag. A thorough coating should be felt around the neck, belly, seams, and corners of the bag. You should feel an evenly thin consistency and not overly gooey amounts • Add seasoning in tablespoon amounts if more is required. Over-seasoning is a common problem, so we recommend a thorough massage before adding more • Hang bag with stocks un-corked and allow excess seasoning to run out. If done properly, there shouldn't be excess, but letting it hang for 20 minutes should be plenty of time for any extra to run out. Dry stocks with brushes or towels after excess is removed. • Test bag with blowpipe by fully inflating and applying pressure with your arm. Bag should remain fully airtight for 30 seconds without adding any more air. Covering the end of the blowpipe may be in order if there is a small amount of air coming back. Seasoning can be re-used if drained back into the bottle. Old/reused seasoning will lose it's pleasant aroma over time and shouldn't be used if it has a bad smell. Your seasoning should give off a nice aroma until it is time to re-treat. This can be one of several indicators that it is time to re-season your bag. Treatments can vary depending on the bag and playing frequency. Quarterly to by-monthly are considered normal. If you're finding you have to re-season more than once a month, you may have a structural leak in the bag that seasoning cannot fix. Extreme dryness in your climate might also be a factor. Check for this even coating every time you get your instrument out to play.
